Welcome to Premier Cru's RSS Feed Center
Premier Cru is pleased to offer its inventory listings through an RSS feed.
If you're familiar with RSS, go ahead and drag the XML links below to your
aggregator. If the previous sentence was completely meaningless to you, read on...
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." It is a standard means for computers to
update each other as information changes. Let's say that you like to read the financial
headlines on Yahoo! News. You might go there once a day and read the news. The great
thing about the web, though, is that many news articles are added all day long. To
keep up with them, you would need to revisit Yahoo! News many times throughout the
day and see what's changed. Lots of times, you'd go and nothing would be new; other
times there would be something new and interesting.
With RSS, Yahoo! provides a "feed" of anything that changes on the site. If you
have the right program on your computer (called an "Aggregator"), your computer
will check the feed periodically and alert you when something has changed.
Now, let's imagine that in addition to Yahoo! News, you also follow Reuters,
the BBC and some special weblogs. Virtually all news sources provide RSS feeds,
so you can follow developments on many websites, as they change, very efficiently,
in a single program. Some refer to RSS as "Tivo for the web."
RSS is not only for news, though.
Craigslist, a listing
service for classified ads, provides RSS feeds so you can subscribe to, say, job
postings or rentals in a particular neighborhood. Amazon provides RSS feeds of some
of its product categories. And, now, Premier Cru provides RSS feeds of its new inventory.
For more information (and a better explanation of RSS), check out
this page.
To use RSS, you'll need an aggregator. The simplest to use is a web-based aggregator such as
bloglines. You can also include RSS feeds in your
"My Yahoo!"
account. If you're more advanced, you can try a PC-based aggregator such as
sharpreader for windows or
Net NewsWire Light
for the Mac (scroll down the page from the full version to the "light" version, which is
free).
IMPORTANT NOTE - Premier Cru is a wine store, and our staff is composed
of wine experts. We're not computer tech support people. While we're very
happy to be the first wine retailer to offer RSS feeds to our customers, we're not
able to provide any help in setting up an aggregator and/or using RSS. If you have
any questions about RSS, answers can be found on the web or from your local teenage
computer whiz. If, on the other hand, you need a recommendation for a great burgundy
at an equally great price, by all means call us!
